A few months ago I got invited by Nike to try the Nike ID experience on Airmax day, and after genuinely spending 3 hours in Nike Town, I left Nike with the most incredible shoe designing experience!

What prompted me to write this post is that designing your own shoes (as exciting as it might be) and trust me, it’s quite exciting, can also feel a bit daunting. You are spending a hefty sum of money and the choices are all yours. So I came up with my personal top 8 tips to consider while designing your own Nike iD’s.

Tip number 1

Listen to and take advice from the incredible team at the store. They have so much experience, have seen so many examples, and have a better idea of how your shoe will come out in real life, they have pretty much tried every combination, so do listen to their opinion!

Tip number 2

Ask for a real model of the shoe you are designing, I found it incredibly useful to touch it, feel the texture and understand how the colours will come out. The program you use to design your own shoe is quite accurate but nothing beats an example of the real thing.

Tip number 3

Try on the same shoe style to make sure you get the size right. Considering the time and effort you are putting in this, it would be silly not to try it on. Sizes vary slightly and in some models like the Airmax I realised I needed a smaller size than what I would usually wear.

Tip number 4

Shoe laces can be changed. Changing shoe laces can completely transform the shoe, what you should consider (at least in the case of the Airmax) is that the plastic piece associated with the shoe lace is what you can’t change. So when picking the shoe laces, keep in mind that he plastic piece is what you are choosing and the shoe laces can always be changed.

Tip number 5

Consider your outfits, the colours of your clothes, where and when you are most likely to wear your Nike ID’s. Do you want them to match your wardrobe, or do you want them to be the statement shoes?

Tip number 6

Find out how many characters your particular shoe type allows you to add as your ID name, some shoes allow for 6 characters on each shoe and others only 4, so make sure you take time to consider it before writing something with a spelling mistake in it! I did that once too!

Tip number 7

Be brave and trust the designer in you, worst comes to worst you can sharpie things or even spray paint them with a rubber paint.

The result

I designed my shoes with summer in mind. I own quite a few dark shoes, and was wanting something to jazz my outfits with a hint of white, something both versatile, stylish and flexible with whatever outfit I chose to throw on. I made sure to add a hint of colour which came from the air bubble cushion, as well as the text at the back of the shoe. I also added a slight geometrical pattern to the outside mesh with the limited AirMax day underlay.

Got anymore tips to share from your experience? I’d love to hear from you  🙂
