My local gym, Ethos, lies within a five minute walk from my house, in the heart of Spitalfields Market. It’s raised up on the second level, with a lovely view of the market stands. Ethos has a very strong super chilled vibe, as you enter up the stairs you will most likely be greeted by the friendliest Labrador and the incredible helpful staff. Ethos is one of my favourite gyms; I tried the TRX class once and was totally hooked since then.

The spaces are well equipped with top of the range equipment. The spinning bikes are used by professional cyclists and are hooked to monitors which give you live statistics on your performance. Ethos offers a wide range of classes such as TRX, barre and hot yoga, and also a space dedicated to tests such as the Inbody DNA testing and a few new services offering coming soon.

The spaces are beautiful and open and each room has a controlled temperature relating to the workout (refer to tip number 1). Ethos also has a lovely terraced bar serving hot beverages, cold pressed juices, delicious protein shakes and cocktails, so this is the place to go to if you are catching up with a friend after a workout.

Tips

1- There are three different temperatures which relate to the workouts, WARM (for cycling), HOT (TRX and barre), VERY HOT (for yoga). If you are planning on going to a cycling class, be aware that it is a non-air conditioned space, so you will sweat more than you would in other gyms.

2- Showers get very busy too, mainly during peak times, so make sure you give yourself enough time to wait for a shower if you are heading to a workout before work. Another thing to consider is that there are only three mirrors and stations; you never want to be the asshole who hogs the space even if you are not using the hairdryer or straighteners. If you all share there should be enough space for everyone.

3- This one is for those shy ones. Toilet cubicles doors don’t reach the floor, and they are in the same space as the showers and the changing rooms. So if you don’t want to add a symphony background to the changing rooms, do consider that before you arrive.

4- Clean mats are hung on the left of the hot yoga class nearer to the TRX space, the dirty mats are hung between the showers and the yoga space, so don’t get confused when picking up your mat.

5- If you are doing Mark Hammond’s TRX class, talking during the class will cost you burpees, I learnt it the hard way, over and over again!

6-The cycling class is not for slackers. Your speed and power is displayed on the screens infront of you, so there’s no place to hide 😀 It’s also a great way to push yourself as you are able to see your stats immediately.

7- The hot yoga class is hardcore, but you have cold, wet, scented towels waiting for you outside the studio door. My best advice is that if you are attending the hot yoga class for the first time, try and stay till the end. I know it might feel like you are going to die, but it is worth pushing your body till the end. It’s worth the chilled towel.
